Berries and Spice | Puntastic Fermentation: 35 Sourdough Starter Name Ideas

I’ve always considered sourdough starters to be the ideal pet. They need love and food about once a week, and the rest of the time, they do their thing, until you need them. And, because of their pet-like characteristics, sourdough starters also need a name (well, deserve one, really). If you’re here I presume you’re looking for inspiration and have run out of ideas. Read on, because I’ve prepared no less than 35 sourdough starter name ideas to help you.

However, if you’re one of those who finds nothing more dire than puns, I recommend going back to my homepage and finding an article that resonates more with you.

Of Breadovich descent

My first sourdough starter, Vasile Breadovich was glorious. Unfortunately, it died from extreme dehydration when I moved to Vienna and there was no one else to feed it. Its descendant, Johnny Breadovich, survived a little over a year. The cause of its death is still suspect, but it also happened while I was away for a couple of months. I have yet to meet a reliable sourdough-starter-sitter…

I recently decided it was time for a new sourdough starter and this is how Rupert Breadovich was born. Fifty grams of rye flour and fifty millilitres of water on the first day. Another fifty of each the next day, and the day after that. Left at room temperature to mingle with the wild yeasts and start bubbling. Just three days later, there it was, all grown up, in all its fermented splendour. Now its domicile has changed, from my kitchen island to the fridge. Rupert receives fifty grams of rye flour and 50 ml of water once a week. That’s all the attention it needs to stay alive.

I can’t quite remember the process of choosing Breadovich as the name. All I know is that I did not come up with it, but my brother’s girlfriend did. And because I did not want to base the entirety of my sourdough starter making life on someone else’s idea, I challenged myself to come up with my own list. Ready for it?
